Absolutely gorgeous hike. The hike up through the wood has elevation but it’s moderate. Then the lake opens up in front of you and it’s like you’re in a different world.

Beautiful hike with amazing views at the end! Very family friendly, we saw plenty of families with kids and older people as well. We did it with our two kids, 8 and 5 years. Neither me nor my kids had any actual hiking experience, husband does, but we did it just fine! Was a little challenging here and there but overall not a difficult hike. On the far side of the lake we came up on a black bear about 30 feet away! Definitely have to keep your head up and eyes out! Would definitely recommend as a hike to do while at the park! Amazing and definitely worth the workout!

Absolutely beautiful hike, it is clear to see why this is one of the park’s most popular attractions. Be bear aware when the season calls for it, signage/warnings will be posted, and pack plenty of water. My wife and I were able to make it through all of the trail, including both sides of avalanche lake, and back again in about 4.5 hours. We saw many families with young children, so I would say this is family friendly, however plan accordingly for water, snacks, and time due to the length possible from this hike. It is absolutely worth seeing, I highly recommend it. Safe hiking!

This is a great hike, with gradual incline. It starts at the cedars boardwalk (which has stunning large cedar trees). After, you continue along a stream that goes through the rock. You mostly go through the forest until you get to the lake. The lake is stunning, and you can also hike to the back side of the lake. It is 1.8 miles to the lake from the trailhead. Very scenic!

Great hike perfect to start the trip if you are travelling from west glacier. Hike was moderately difficult but u thoroughly enjoyed it . Less sunlight falling directly on the trail so it was comfortable. The lake was beautiful especially the reflection of the mountains on the water which was constantly changing at different times of the day
