Explore White Sands National Park's Unique Gypsum Dunes

Too beautiful! The place is fantastic, and the alkali flat hike was the easiest, most pleasant, (and barefoot!) hike we have ever done! We started at 3.15 pm and while the sun was hot, the sand was cool, soft on the feet, and very easy to walk on. Surprisingly easy to climb the dunes, we both have knee problems and we felt zero stress while doing this hike. It seems indeed suitable for most people. We waited for the spectacular sunset, and it did not disappoint. We were super lucky that there was zero wind this afternoon, and the temperature was unusually hot for this time of year. Cannot recommend enough.

Great park, many places with picnic tables with an overhang to hide from the sun. Has a bbq as well. Definitely go in the morning or at sunset. Must wear sunglasses and sunscreen and a HAT. Also bring lots of water. The sand is so bright and white, that the sun reflects very brightly 🌞 The sand is cool to the touch which was interesting. Nice visitors center and gift shop. Some of the employees seems irritated when asked questions. Doesn't take long to go through the park, unless you plan on hiking the dunes. They have sleds and boards to rent or buy and also wax. The rental was $27 for a sled, but deposit $10 was returned after you returned the sled. The gift shop has many choices of drinks, snacks, icee drinks and merch. They also have sunscreen, Tylenol and phone chargers. Spotty cell service in park but overall great cell service in such an isolated area. Not an all day park per say but you can stay as long as it takes to explore.

White Sands National Park is truly a one-of-a-kind destination. The vast, glistening white gypsum dunes look like snow but feel surprisingly cool to the touch. Tips for your visit: * Go for sunset: The colors are absolutely breathtaking and it’s the best time to beat the heat. * Be prepared: Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sunglasses to handle the intense glare. * Have fun: If you’re visiting with family, definitely rent or bring a sled for the dunes—it’s a blast! It’s well worth the drive and easily one of the most unique parks in the U.S. system. Highly recommended!

This place is definitely worth visiting and offers a unique experience. There are many interesting stops along the route throughout the park, and a map is provided upon entry. One of the highlights is walking barefoot, which adds to the experience. It's also a great location for taking photos. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. I recommend arriving early, as lines tend to get quite long by early afternoon. Overall, I would highly recommend this place!

Absolutely surreal place to visit. Beautiful place. It is about $25 to get in and well worth it.. it was extremely hot during the time we visited. The 'sand" is unique is a way that it doesn't stick to you like normal sand. Some parts of the whitesands are restricted due to unexploded ordnance. Great place to visit and worth the drive.
