Wow!! What an unforgettable experience! We took the train up and the bus back and were so happy with our day. The train ride in the open air cab was the highlight! We thought 3 1/2 hours would seem long, but it flew by. So many beautiful things to see! Make sure to book on the right side of train when heading north for the best vantage points along the river.

Amazing experience!! Riding the rails in the open cars was the way to go. Beautiful sites all along the way. The workers were kind and respectful. Taking a backpacking trip is easy through the train company. Everything was well organized and easy to navigate.

LOVED THIS!! It’s worth it! We only ride one way. 3.5 hours. We were in the vintage car, so it was covered. There’s no AC, but you can open all the windows and it’s nice that way. I do wish there were shades or little curtains on the top half of the window because the sun was glaring a few times. BEAUTIFUL VIEWS!! The staff is very friendly. Overall, it was a great experience to have.

My wife and I rode the steam train back from Silverton to Durango and had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend this trip. A few pieces of advice I can give anyone thinking about making the trip. 1) if you are taking the bus up to Silverton and train back, take the early bus @10:00 am. Silverton is so quiet and peaceful at 11:30 compared to after 1 when the second bus and first train arrive. Silverton itself is a beautiful small mountain town. If you can plan to spend at least an hour walking around. The town museum is really neat and is a great way to learn about the history of the area. Overall my wife and I had a great experience, although I will say the food and drinks onboard the train were a little pricey for what you get. The views and scenery were absolutely worth it.

This is one of those adventures you just can't skip. I went ten years ago and then again last weekend. This time I chose the first class car caboose, and you get to be out on the observation deck. Our guide, J. Leigh was amazing, and I learned so much more about the train and its history. Definitely worth the extra money.
