Don't let this experience slip by... It's definitely worth the cost! You'll be on the train approx. 3.5 hours after leaving Durango, then a two-hour break in Silverton, and another 3.5 hours back to Durango. The two hours in Silverton is plenty of time to get a bit to eat, coffee, or ice cream, and walk around the town. There's a museum that's worth checking out, too, but it takes an hour to walk through. I recommend this if you're not sitting down for a full meal. On the train, the bathrooms are clean, the seats are comfortable, and there are concessions with the best apple cider and plenty of other snack/drink options. We sat in the coach area (not an open car), and we were able to get stunning photos because the windows opened up. Also, the train conductor, brake man, and other staff were informative and very nice! Overall, it was a wonderful experience!

Best experience ever. Took my mom on the train. We rode the train from Durango to Silverton and rode the bus back. Most beautiful scenery ever. Have been out that way in the Winter many times but this was the first time in the Fall. The Aspens were simply stunning! Highly recommend this trip. You won't be disappointed!

Just wow! If you consider yourself and outdoor enthusiasts, this is a must do adventure. Stay in Silverton, and walk to the train. Take the half day ride to Durango, and take the 1 hour shuttle back. No need to do the full day, out and back. It's spectacular in the fall as you can see the aspens changing color. The ride is basically flat the entire trip as you follow the Animas river the entire way. You travel through some of the most remote yet beautiful land in Colorado. Emily at the ticket counter will tell you which side to get your tickets on for the best view. She was very friendly. There is a concessions car that sells a fee select adult drinks and water and a few snacks. Not a full meal, but enough to make it for the 4 hour trip.

This trip was so cool! However, I do recommend taking the train up to Silverton, and taking the bus back down. I did the train both ways and I just think that the views are better on the way up. Plus after the 3 1/2 hour ride up there, and the 2 hours walking around Silverton, you're going to be tired and taking the much shorter bus ride back to Durango sounds nice.

This is a very unique and awesome experience. We chose to ride in the Yankee girl which is for 21 and older patrons, this provided us a bathroom in our train car and unlimited soft drinks and water. For 6 hour round trip train ride this was very worth it. The views are beautiful and our train car attendant was awesome. To my surprise I got engaged when we got off the train in Silverton, and has myself a fiancé on the train ride back! It was worth the trip and I would recommend taking the train in the spring or fall as it has no air conditioning. I highly recommend this experience.
