Discover the Mysteries of the Deep at Birch Aquarium

We visited the Birch Aquarium over the weekend looking for a fun indoor activity to escape the heat we’ve been dealing with in Southern California. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly staff member who gave us a quick overview of the aquarium and pointed out where the different exhibits and attractions were located. As we made our way through the aquarium, it quickly became apparent that getting a good look at some of the sea life was going to be more challenging than expected. Several exhibits were crowded with adults standing directly in front of the displays while having unrelated conversations, making it difficult for others to get a chance to see anything. There were also quite a few children running from exhibit to exhibit, pushing their way through crowds and banging on the glass or yelling at the animals, with very little intervention from their parents. Unfortunately, the behavior of some guests took away from what could have otherwise been a much more enjoyable experience. Another thing we noticed was that the aquarium felt like it was on the smaller side compared to some of the other aquariums we’ve visited. While there was still a good variety of marine life on display, we found ourselves moving through the exhibits fairly quickly. Putting the crowds and guest behavior aside, Birch Aquarium itself is nicely designed, and the exhibits we were able to see featured a wide variety of fish and other marine life. The displays were well put together and visually appealing, and there was still plenty to enjoy throughout the facility. I can definitely see why Birch Aquarium is a popular destination for families with younger children. Just be prepared for a smaller-sized aquarium, potentially crowded exhibits, and, unfortunately, some inconsiderate guests that may make it harder to fully enjoy the displays. Visiting during a less busy time may provide a much more relaxed experience.

This is a smaller aquarium, but it was a lovely one to visit. We picked the Birch aquarium as one of the spots to visit using our City Pass & it was quick and easy to get inside. There is a short walk from the parking lot to the aquarium, but the walk itself isn't that bad. There are two sides to the aquarium to explore, an outside area where you can see some adorable as can be small blue penguins and another outside area with touch pools. The area with the touch pools has a gorgeous view of the beach & ocean as the aquarium sits up higher so you'll have a great view for photos. We thought they had a great selection of sea life to view. They had several different types of Jelly fish & several different species of Sea horses. I absolutely loved seeing the Sea Kelp Dragons, they are so cool to see. The bathrooms were clean, the gift shop was nice, and all of the staff we interacted with were friendly. I would say we were here for 45 minutes altogether?

The San Diego Aquarium was a very nice and memorable visit from start to finish. The experience felt genuinely unique compared to other aquariums I’ve been to. Being able to see the fish and marine mammals up close really added something special—it made everything feel more immersive and alive in a way that photos or videos just can’t capture. The overall atmosphere was calm, engaging, and easy to enjoy at your own pace. Every area felt thoughtfully put together, and it kept surprising me with how close you could get to so many of the animals. The views throughout the visit were also unmatched—beautiful and peaceful, adding even more to the experience. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and refreshing visit. I’d definitely go back.

It has been a while since I have been here. We went in the morning on Mother’s Day. It wasn’t busy yet. Parking is complimentary for 3 hours. As always, it is worth a visit and fun & educational for the whole family. There was a tank cleaning and feeding show that was amazing. The view of La Jolla shores was spectacular from the back of the aquarium.

We had such an amazing time. Although it was a busy Thursday an way unexpected with school back in session we still were able to enjoy ourselves. My son enjoyed seeing all the different fish and beautiful views definitely would recommend and will be going back again soon.
