Trek the Beautiful Tomales Point Trail in Point Reyes

It is a perfect blend of accessibility and natural beauty, ideal for the whole family, including young kids. This trail, less than 10 miles long with around 1,000 feet in elevation gain, is pleasantly manageable and not overly strenuous. As you meander along, you're treated to the dynamic views of the ocean, observing the tides shift from high to low, adding a serene backdrop to your journey. One of the highlights is the opportunity to capture the majestic elks in their natural habitat, making for an unforgettable photographic moment. The path is adorned with a vibrant array of wildflowers, seamlessly blending into the scenic beauty of the trail. It's a wonderful spectacle that reminds you of the simple joys nature offers. This trail is what you would expect when looking to enjoy the gifts of nature. I did the 10 mile there & back hike on a Saturday morning and arrived early to find parking. At 8:30am the lot was almost full. The roads on this side of Point Reyes are weather-worn and uneven so you have to go slow. The trail was easy-moderate with some steep points. Vegetation on the path closer to the Point is overgrown but there were signs stating it’s not maintained. Highly recommend closed toe shoes and long pants if you plan on going the full 4.7 miles. Also, bring at least 2 water bottles. Overall, very scenic hike with elk along the way. I recommend coming on a week day if you want a quiet or more relaxed hike.

The length of the trail is a bit intimidating but even if you are not doing it all, the first 2 miles of the trail are very nice, with wildflowers and coastal views. I didn't get to see any elk up close tho. The only nuisance is that you have to choose between hiking in a cold fog (if you go early) or not finding parking at all if you go after 10am, the parking space for this trail definitely has to be expanded.

My partner and I arrived at Tomales Point Trail around 10AM on a Saturday and we could not believe how quiet the drive was entering the preserve. After we arrived, not more the 30min-1hr later and scores of families started the trail. My recommendation if you want to have the place almost to yourself is to arrive between 8AM and 9AM. The preserve is very peaceful and you could spot a variety of different animals. The trail itself is not very challenging. The superbloom of flowers was the main reason for our visit. Beautiful trail that leads to an overlook over the ocean, along with old buildings (open museum) at the start of the trail. Plenty of wildflowers, birds, and elk near the trail but beware of skunks! There was one skunk that sprayed a hiker when it was frightened by others, and the smell was unpleasant. Overall beautiful place, easy walk, with much to see and explore!
