Ride Buggies on Oceano Dunes

Over such a great experience! Every single staff was so friendly and helpful. From helping us park, to Lynn getting us fitted with our gear, to the shuttle to the vehicles... Special shout out to the team patrolling the dunes checking in on the riders. Also very impressed the bathroom had 8 rolls of toilet paper ready to go. A heads up: they mention it but yeah the area is deceptively large. Highly recommend to drive thru zone 1 until u get your bearings. Also recommend bringing a bandana or you may swallow sand.

Imagine a vehicle with vague steering and no reverse. Now place that in an environment with lots of unmarked hazards. Sound like fun? If so,rent a sun buggy. Oceano Dunes is a really unique spot on the CA coast, but it is also challenging. Part of renting involves watching a “safety” video. They highlight lots of things not to do, but also give the impression that one can move the front end of the buggy. Nope, they weigh a ton. So we first were stopped at the top of a dune with no way to steer away from dropping off the edge or to back up. 45 minutes after calling we had help to move it off. They left before we restarted which was a mistake. The buggy dug itself into the sand immediately and had to be towed out another half hour later. I cannot recommend the 2 person buggy unless you know the terrain very well.

The check in process was a torture with just one check in Rep. The additional paperwork was unexpected as we thought all the forms were completed online. It took a whole extra hour to wait in line to check in, to get a clip board to fill out more forms then to have to get back in line wait some more and then to finally get our helmets goggles and then another 15 to 20 minutes wait for a shuttle to take us out to the beach to get our vehicles. Our reservation was at 10, we arrived at 9:15…and we did not start driving until almost 11. All of the staff was really nice. You’ll definitely need more than one hour out there in the dunes. We booked two hours but only used about 90 mins. I really hope they make the check-in process smoother in the future. Highly recommend Sun Buggie Fun ATV. Everyone was very helpful. ATVs were in good condition. The early morning online discount made the excursion more affordable. The sand dunes were beautiful. It was a fun family activity.

Overall experience was a 10/10. The whole process was pretty quick. It was my first time riding atvs, and the worker that set us up was the nicest guy :) (even upgraded us to 450s) one of the Atvs died on us about half way through and the response time was super fast and the same guy came and picked me up and got me on a new atv and even gave us some extra time. I wish I knew his name to give him his credit but we came on 7/21/25 for the 1-3pm slot if that helps narrow it down, I’ve never written a review in my life so that should tell you everything you need to know about my experience lol I will definitely be coming back :)
