I’ve been to WC about 4 times. And yet, I’ve never really fallen in love with the place. I’ve had a couple of great times here: both were spontaneous and I just ordered a glass of wine and sat on the lawn.
This past time, I was so disappointed. First, the man at the welcome center was nice but didn’t greet me upon arrival. I had to go up, say hi, and then he said hi and asked what was I there for. It was just so awkward.
Then, we walk into the wine tasting venue (which is typically reserved for wine club members). Beautiful place by the way. But this lady asks us about our picnic lunches that we reserved. (You have to reserve this at least a day in advance I think and it’s $20) I said yes we have 6 reserved. I’m not sure what was going on that day but everything I said, the staff just looked at me weird and without confirmation or acknowledgment. Again, very awkward. Then I ask if the cookies in the picnic basket has peanuts (since my kid has peanut allergies). One lady jumped up and immediately went to find out. The lady that I initially talked to doesn’t even look up from her iPad and asks “how severe is her allergy?” I turn around and look at her to respond. But as I’m talking and responding to her, she doesn’t even bother looking at me or looking up from her iPad! I feel like that’s just human courtesy- if someone is answering your question, you should look at them. Horrible horrible - just inconsiderate.
Eva was our hostess and sommelier. She was really great and friendly but it was pretty slow. We tried 6 wines (I think) and it took 2 hours. I was so ready to go. And our lunch that we ordered for noon didn’t come out until nearly 1pm and I had to ask for it twice. I just felt very unimportant and like my business was not appreciated.
The food in the picnic lunch was not very good. The sandwich was very overly mustardy (with grain mustard) and the tomatoes/mozzarella salad was not good at all. I really did like the pasta salad. The cookie was ok. Having a Rambler was nice. Our bottle of tap water was never refilled - there were all these servers walking around and no one refilled our bottle. Like I said, I just felt like we were overlooked and unimportant.
The wine is as typical as I remember it. I’ve always liked the Hunter the best and this time around, I still liked Hunter the best.
I will give a big shoutout to Cody (or whoever confirmed my reservations through email). He/she was extremely friendly and responsive. I really wish this level of service resonated throughout the entire facility.
So, 2 shoutouts to Cody & Eva — really good representation for WC.
I really don’t think I will be returning here even if they win more awards. Kuhlman Cellars has wonderful wine and they make me feel special each time I visit. French Connection is the same - the level of service really elevates the experience and wine. I am so thoroughly disappointed at WC.
