Canoe Caddo Lake's Majestic Cypress Swamps

We had a wonderful experience camping at Caddo Lake State Park. One of my favorite parts was how immersed in nature we felt throughout our stay. The park is beautiful, peaceful, and a great place to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors. The campground was clean and well-maintained, and I appreciated seeing park staff regularly making rounds. It helped us feel safe and secure during our stay. One of the highlights was the wildlife. We even spotted an alligator, which made the experience feel even more unique and memorable. It was such a neat reminder that you're truly in nature at Caddo Lake. My only minor complaint was the sand on the tent pads, which seemed to get everywhere. That said, it was a very small inconvenience compared to an otherwise excellent experience. Overall, this is a beautiful state park, and we will definitely be back.

Mystical Beauty! We visited this state park in April,2025. When we arrived at the information center, the officer told us that park's canoe rentals are closed, but she did provide us with a list of other tour providers. To arrange the boat trip, we then got in touch with Mr. Dan Walker from the list, who runs Chill-Lax-N Boat Tours. The greatest way to take in this state park's beauty is by boat. During the 90-minute trip, we understood how this natural lake formed, its history, and the breathtaking views of Big Cypress Bayou, bald cypress trees covered in Spanish moss, wetlands, and backwaters. The cypress trees have a vibrant green color during this season, and lilies bloom in the lake. Following our boat tour, we had lunch and took a short walk through the Caddo Forest loop trail. There are mosquitoes in some parts of the forest, so we used bug repellent. We also went by the famous CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) pavilion, a shelter house. The trail is well-maintained and properly marked. We had a great time in this park and would come here again.

What a great park! We had the best time. We tent camped and the sites were perfect. The hiking trails are relaxed and pretty easy. The screened in shelter was larger than I expected and very clean. They had firewood at our site when we arrived. Honestly the lake is the main attraction but after we looked at it we hiked and enjoyed the scenery. I saw others kayaking it but we had other adventures to attend. ❤️⛺🥾🐾

Amazing getaway for our 12 year anniversary, we got spot 65 which is right on the water, so we got to enjoy the wildlife night and day! The canoe rental was decently priced and east access to them and the water. The park rangers were helpful and informative with our questions. We caught a small mough bass in the pond and it was a great experience overall!

**Caddo Lake State Park** 5 stars If you’re looking for a landscape that feels completely otherworldly, this is the place. Caddo Lake is famous for being one of the only natural lakes in Texas, and the scenery is stunning—towering bald cypress trees draped in thick Spanish moss creating a "mysterious swamp" vibe that looks incredible in photos, especially if you catch the morning fog. **The Experience:** * **Paddling:** This is the highlight. We rented a canoe at Saw Mill Pond (they are first-come, first-serve) and spent a few hours following the paddling trails. It’s like navigating a giant maze through the water, and it’s very peaceful. If you aren't comfortable rowing yourself, I’d highly recommend booking a pontoon boat tour in the nearby town of Uncertain to see the deeper parts of the bayou. * **Hiking:** There are about 2.5 miles of trails. They aren’t overly long, but they offer a nice transition from the swampy bottomlands up into the pine forests. The Pine Ridge Loop is great for a quick walk to see the different habitats. * **Wildlife:** Keep your eyes peeled! We saw plenty of turtles, herons, and even a small alligator near the banks. **Pro-Tips:** * **Cell Service:** It’s very spotty once you get into the park and out on the water, so download your maps or grab a physical trail map at the office before you head out. * **Rentals:** If you want a canoe, try to get there earlier in the day as they can go quickly on weekends. * **Nearby Food:** After a day of exploring, head over to the River Bend in Karnack for some fried catfish or gator—it’s right on the water and fits the atmosphere perfectly. Whether you're into photography, kayaking, or just want to see a different side of Texas nature, this park is a 10/10.
